Trenchery - Reductive woodcut

Trenchery

Medium: Reductive woodcut

Size: 11” x 14”

Semester: Spring 2023

Class: Printmaking I

Trenchery is seven layers of color theory and frustration that showcases the ultimate fish betrayal. This piece utilizes an analogous color scheme that gives the piece a feeling of unity.

Based on a picture taken at The Texas State Aquarium, the image is believed to show a potato grouper, who was not supposed to eat another fish in his tank. This woodblock and I spent quite a few long nights together as I tried to navigate the reductive woodcut process for the first time. The silly subject matter of this print is a great contributor as to why I have chosen to further explore printmaking. Medium density fiberboard (MDF) relief printing has taken my heart and run away with it, especially the reductive process. Over time I have taken more of a liking to MDF over linoleum, as I find finer details easier to preserve when printing.

This piece was the first of mine to ever show in a gallery at the 2023 TAMU-CC President’s Circle Student Art Exhibition.
